SEROSTIM

SOMATROPIN
Infectious Disease Approved 1996-08-23

Serostim (somatropin) is indicated for the treatment of HIV patients experiencing wasting or cachexia. The medication is used to increase lean body mass and body weight while improving physical endurance in this patient population. It must be administered in conjunction with concomitant antiretroviral therapy. This therapy serves as an anabolic intervention to address the metabolic complications and physical decline associated with HIV-related weight loss.

How SEROSTIM Works

Serostim functions as an anabolic and anticatabolic agent by interacting with specific receptors on a variety of cell types, including myocytes, hepatocytes, and adipocytes. These interactions also involve lymphocytes and hematopoietic cells to produce therapeutic effects. While some of these effects are mediated by insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), the drug also exerts influence through other pathways. This multi-cellular interaction helps the body increase lean mass and improve physical endurance.
